NoVA LUUP 2010 Legislative Agenda

Predatory Lending Reform
Our UU faith is founded on the principle that every person has inherent worth
and so it follows that we will work to end usury and exploitation of low-income
people.  In 2010, NoVA LUUP will again ask our Northern Virginia
Representatives to ban abusive lending practices such as Car Title Loans, and to
cap interest rates at 36%.

Choice
NoVA LUUP will stand on the side of love to protect a woman’s right to chose
from all reproductive options, and will work to reduce the number of unintended
pregnancies in Virginia. Additionally, we will work to increase accurate, age-
appropriate information in the following subject areas: human development,
relationships, personal skills, sexual behavior, sexual health, and society and
culture.

Gay Lesbian Transgender Bisexual Rights
Our UU Principles call us to respect the inherent worth and dignity of all people,
and so it follows that NoVA LUUP will work to end discrimination, to protect all
families, and create safe communities for all.
Specifically, we are focusing on Workplace Protection for GLBT persons. It is still
legal to fire people because they are gay or even suspected of being gay in
Virginia. (I know -- isn't that incredible?)
And we'll be watching for any other legislation in the long march for GLBT
equality in the Commonwealth, and will let our Armchair Lobby Corps members
know.

WHAT YOU CAN DO:

  • Sign up for our “Armchair Lobby Corps" to act when our
voice needs to be heard in Richmond.
  • Invite us to come to your congregation to do a "Legislative
    Update" on the 2010 Session.
  • Support our work and become a NoVA LUUP member.

2010, being an “even year,” is a “long” session year, which means that the
session will last two months, and could be extended. The budget will be a BIG
topic this year, and NoVA LUUP will be watching to see how much “bone” is cut,
and will work to protect low-income people as the session unfolds if needed.
